A strong artesian well existed under the waters of the estuary.  It was free flowing water from the earth and was used by the community members for a pure water source. This is the story behind the song.

Before railroads and planes, the sea was the main road for trade. Sailors crossed by skill and stars, with voyages lasting months and barely a pause between. Even now, over 80% of goods still move by ship. In this Waterline episode, KC explores that long tradition—sailing lore, Puget Sound trade before 1920, and the songs that carried those stories across the water.
